Who is a candidate for rhinoplasty? How do I choose my doctor?

Who is a candidate for rhinoplasty

Article: Prof. Dr. Adnan Fuat Büyüklü

Rhinoplasty, also known as nose surgery, is a surgical procedure that aims to change the structure of the nose either for cosmetic reasons or to improve how it works. It can be done to enhance the shape of the nose – like fixing a hump, reshaping the tip, or making the nose less wide – or to help with breathing issues such as nasal congestion.

Who is a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty can be performed for cosmetic or functional reasons.

Cosmetic Reasons:

  • People who aren't happy with the shape, the hump, the width, or the overall look of their nose.

  • Those who feel their nose doesn't quite fit or harmonize with the rest of their face.

Functional Reasons:

  • People who have trouble breathing.

  • Those with structural issues like a curved nasal cartilage (what we call septum deviation) or ongoing nasal congestion.

  • People who've had problems with their nose due to accidents, injuries, or being born with a certain shape.

What to Keep in Mind When Choosing a Rhinoplasty Surgeon

Rhinoplasty is a very delicate operation if you want a result that looks natural, works well, and suits your face. That's why picking the right doctor is so important. Here are some things to think about when making your choice:

Expertise and Experience:
It's really important to choose a surgeon who has plenty of experience with rhinoplasty and specializes in either cosmetic surgery or ear, nose, and throat (ENT).

Before and After Photos of Previous Patients:
Take a good look at the doctor's before and after photos. This helps you understand their style and their sense of what looks good.

Communication and Trust:
Your surgeon needs to truly understand what you're hoping for, and they should be open and honest with you. A good surgeon will help you set realistic expectations based on your nose's structure and your unique facial features.

Patient Reviews and References:
It can be very helpful to read about other people's experiences – look for reviews, recommendations, and what past patients have said about the doctor.

Hospital and Clinic Conditions:
Don't forget to consider the hygiene standards, the quality of post-surgery care, and the equipment at the hospital or clinic where the procedure will be done. All of these things matter just as much as the doctor's skill.

Rhinoplasty – or nose job surgery – is a very frequently requested type of operation, whether the person has nasal congestion or not. Even though it's commonly performed, rhinoplasty is actually a very delicate and challenging surgery. Why? Because the nose has a three-dimensional structure. We reshape and contour this three-dimensional structure, and then a healing period begins. And having that healing period go smoothly is just as important as the surgery itself.

The most important thing for people who are considering rhinoplasty is this: they need to really decide what they don't like about their nose and what kind of change they actually want. That's the first step.

The next stage is choosing your surgeon. And here's something I really want to emphasize – it's not very healthy to choose a doctor based on photos or blogs on social media. The healthiest way is to have a one-on-one conversation, face to face, and build that connection. When the surgeon's capabilities and your expectations meet somewhere in the middle, that's when the healthiest result will come out.
